Nowadays, living in a loft has become quite popular, as it comes with the contemporary, urban atmosphere. A single spacious room in a big city can make one feel as if they are on top of the world. However, if you want to lead the cosmopolitan lifestyle, you have to decorate your loft properly. Of course, you can never go wrong with the traditional style, but it doesn’t exactly scream modernity. With that in mind, here are a couple of creative décor ideas for your loft design.
Simple window treatments
Living in a loft is a lot about the view, which is why your loft design should aim to keep your window treatments simple. You can choose sheer blinds, or remote-controlled treatments if you have tall windows. They will let the light in when needed, but you will still have enough privacy. You can also choose not to have any window treatments at all, but that’s more suitable for taller lofts where privacy is not an issue.
Fancy walls
When it comes to loft design, the general rule is that they should be painted in one, neutral color. This is because, technically, there is only one room, so you need to keep the space balanced and coordinated. However, as we are talking about non-traditional options, don’t hesitate to add pops of other, bolder colors. You can do this by adding some interesting painting effects, like stripes and spots, or removable wallpaper. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can find many beautiful wallpaper options that would fit your loft perfectly.
Bare flooring is a hallmark of loft design
Covering the entire floor of a loft in carpet would be a shame. You want your loft to look spacious, so don’t hesitate to leave the floor bare. What you should do, though, is use stained wooden flooring if you want to add some contrast to the neutral walls. Or, you can also leave the concrete exposed and seal it with a colored concrete stain. To finish off your loft design, feel free to add a few colorful rugs to the seating areas, as they go well with the minimalist style.
Modern furnishing

When talking about your furniture, you should follow the minimalist style. Opt for modern furniture options, like luxurious and comfortable lounges and glass coffee tables. Keep the space clutter-free, and focus on emphasizing the functionality of the loft. Don’t overcrowd the space with accessories, leave enough room for walking between the furniture items, and make sure to add plenty of textures and patterns in order to keep the space interesting. Finally, use your furniture to introduce more color into your loft design, and consider hanging a couple of colorful pictures on the walls as well.
Clever storage solutions
In modern, urban lofts, there is usually less obvious storage due to the minimalist style and open space. However, this doesn’t mean you have to actually cram all your stuff into one armoire. There are plenty of storage options that won’t harm the visual appeal of your loft design. For instance, you can buy furniture that doubles as storage, like multi-functional ottomans or storage benches, and you can install shelves at different heights.
Plenty of light
Lighting is important in every home interior design, and a loft design is not an exception. During the day, you should let in as much natural light as you can. Then, when the sun sets, you should rely on chandeliers, wall sconces, floor lamps, and table lamps, depending on the height of your ceiling and the general layout. Either way, don’t forget to layer the light and match the lighting fixtures to the overall style of the loft.
Add nature to your loft design
If you live far above the ground floor, your view probably consists of tall buildings and the blue sky. As beautiful as that view can be, it still lacks nature. So, if you can’t really see much nature, consider bringing it inside by installing a small water fountain, getting a lot of plants, and using natural materials. Additionally, if you love pets, consider installing an aquarium or buying a couple of parrots – they can be a nice decorative element, and they can really bring your loft to life.
Useful mirrors
If you live in a smaller loft, you probably want to make your space appear larger than it is. One of the best ways to do that is by using mirrors. You don’t need many of them, as even a few can do the trick if you place them right. For example, if you want to make your loft brighter, you can place them opposite your windows.
Living in a loft does not mean that you won’t have room to express yourself. No matter how big or small, if you make use of these tips and add a touch of your own personality, you will create a stylish and comfortable home that you will definitely enjoy living in.
