Every year, a handful of new home decoration trends briefly shake up the interior design scene. Most of these trends are one-hit wonders that fade into obscurity almost as quickly as they appeared, but a few stick around. Here is a look at some of these timeless trends in color, wallpaper and home decor as the world enters 2023.
Trending Colors
1. Warm Neutrals with a Twist
A warm neutral color palette is the current go-to scheme for interior design. Wood and earth tones are also gaining popularity as architecture shifts to more eco-friendly styles. Blues, greens, grays and various shades of brown have the most significant psychological effects on the viewer. These colors aren’t anything new in home design, but they come with a twist this time.
Warm neutrals match exceptionally well with a variety of bright, bold colors. Reds, oranges and yellows aren’t just for the autumn season — they look good year-round when you offset them with an appropriate neutral shade. Here are some complementary color combinations you should consider:
- Blue and orange
- Blue and gold
- Red and white
- Red and black
- Yellow and gray
- Yellow and blue
Add colors with high temperatures to small decorative items around the house, such as lampshades, textiles and artwork. These accessories are large enough to stand on their own but small enough to avoid overpowering the room’s other neutral shades.
2. Moody Minimalism
While more and more warm color combinations enter the scene, the minimalist color scheme remains a stabilizing force. Black, white and gray are still the most popular colors for interior design because they work with just about any architectural style. These versatile colors can also improve the home’s property value because they appeal to a broader range of buyers.
A minimalist color scheme tends to give the room a dark and moody atmosphere, but this feeling is critical to brutalism, industrialism and other relevant design styles. Making black, gray or cream your primary color will open up a world of design possibilities in various areas that create a timeless look.
Sophisticated Wallpaper Designs
Wallpapers of the past used to be almost entirely monochromatic, with the occasional stripe pattern making an appearance. As everyone enters 2023, wallpapers are much more sophisticated. These three particular design trends have made a huge leap in popularity.
1. Scenic Views
The fastest-growing trend in wallpaper design is the depiction of scenic landscapes. Forests, mountains, beaches, deserts — you name it, there’s a wallpaper for it. This trend is yet another part of the growing emphasis on biophilic design features. People are swapping their monochromatic wallpapers for large-scale natural portraits that reflect their local climate.
As people relocate to cities and suburbs, they need to find ways to compensate for the absence of nature. Nobody wants to be surrounded by artificial decor all the time. Scenic wallpaper helps them stay in touch with the natural world and adds another layer of texture to their home’s interior design.
2. Botanical Patterns
Continuing with the biophilic theme, you can make your wallpapers stand out with a beautiful botanical pattern. Treescapes, vines and other plant designs perfectly encapsulate the average homeowner’s top priorities in 2023 — wellness, sustainability, durability and authenticity. Something about a tree or flower’s poetic asymmetry puts people at ease.
Many postmodern interior designs have almost too much symmetry. Humans are imperfect creatures and planet Earth is an imperfect world — your architecture should reflect those imperfections.
3. Stripes
Striped wallpaper is a timeless design choice, but people are starting to get more creative. Instead of using neat and orderly lines, you can vary the width and consistency to create a more sophisticated look. Stripes are also more subtle than natural landscapes or botanical patterns if subtlety is what you’re looking for.
Plus, you can install lined wallpaper vertically or horizontally to accommodate your living space. Vertical stripes generally look better in hallways, while horizontal ones look better alongside staircases. They make the room look modern and tasteful but never too trendy or tacky. Striped wallpapers will stand the test of time while other design trends come and go.
Tasteful Decor
Your home’s interior decorative accessories — like furniture and artwork — complement the color scheme and wallpaper. They might be small, but they make a huge difference. Here are some tasteful decor trends designers have taken a liking to.
1. Round Shapes
Round shapes were one of the earliest design features of ancient architecture and they’re starting to come back. This trend also corresponds with the biophilic theme, as round structures mirror our natural environments. Nature primarily consists of curves, not jagged edges. You can incorporate these decor trends in many different ways:
- Arches
- Columns
- Circular mirrors
- Spherical light fixtures
- Porthole windows
- Curved tables and chairs
Postmodern interior design’s rough edges might be bolder and eye-popping, but this effect doesn’t last forever. They don’t possess the same everlasting beauty as the round shapes you often find in nature. Replacing sharp right angles with softer ones creates a more easygoing atmosphere that aligns more closely with the modern homeowner’s priorities.

2. Natural Materials
Natural building materials are also making a comeback in close correlation with round architecture. Drywall, shag carpet floors and fiberglass ceilings are out — hardwood floors and stone countertops are in. Artificial design elements might be cheaper and easier to find, but they’re not as lively or durable. They also remove the building further from nature.
Wood, stone and brick [organic] decor will bring you back to simpler times when architecture reflected the human-earth relationship. The average homeowner doesn’t have to build their house from scratch anymore, but they should still strive to give it that authentic appearance. Plus, natural decor will stay in good condition for years to come.
If your home has a fireplace, you should know it’s the coziest space in your house. Whether you use it or let it sit there, your fireplace is easily the centerpiece of all your holiday decorations. Making your fireplace stand out will promote a restful feel and you can dress it up with ornamentation or even a coat of paint. Whatever the case, don’t let it just sit there. By dressing up your fireplace, you can instantly change the vibe of your entire home.
Natural Elements Make for a Timeless Design
You’ve probably noticed a common theme between most of these color, wallpaper and decor trends — a return to nature. Instead of trying to one-up each other with new and obscure architectural styles, homeowners are going back to their roots. It will be interesting to see how these interior design trends grow in 2023 and beyond.
