We are delighted to share Rose Morrison’s post on 8 Ways to Make Your Existing Decor Feel Festive for the Holidays in her guest article for Slipcovers for Your Walls, casartblog for Casart Coverings custom removable and reusable artisan wallcovering.

The holidays are an exciting and festive time for nearly everyone. You have chances to see people you may not have seen all year and all the events and get-togethers can leave you too tired to decorate your own home.
Whether you’ve allocated more of your budget toward gifts — or you simply have no time to decorate in between everywhere you’re supposed to be — you can make your current decor serve you. Here are a few ways to dress up your home for the holidays using only things you already have.
1. Stream a Festive a Scene

If you live in a smaller space, you may not have the traditional fireplace to make your home cozy for the winter. Most televisions have internet connectivity options these days. You can stream an hours-long video that creates a holiday ambiance.
Having the TV on a scene of a crackling fireplace with holiday music playing in the background can make your home ready for the holidays, even if you haven’t decorated anything else. It’s a great option if you’re hosting loved ones for a get-together and need to decorate quickly with something you already have. Since these videos or streams often last for several hours, they’ll run for the entirety of your event without any interference from you.
2. Bring Colors Front and Center

When decorating with what you have, think of the colors that remind you of the season. You’ll want to bring these to the forefront of your home and decorate around them. Use them as your centerpieces and move your other decorations to accommodate them. Choose deep, rich colors to promote a winter vibe. If you have nothing else, you can stand up greeting cards you receive throughout the season.
If you want to focus more on the holidays, go for reds, greens and golds people commonly associate with the season. Even seeing them together will connote the holidays in people’s minds. Though red might bring some people a feeling of unease, it also evokes around the same percentage of happiness, meaning you should lean into decorating more with your red items if they make you happy and conjure up festive thoughts of the season.
3. Use Heirlooms

If you have any holiday decorations passed down to you from family members, consider using them to decorate with. They may not fit your style — especially if they’re several decades old — but they might bring up good memories of your time with that person. When decorating with what you have instead of buying new decorations, you can always opt for heirlooms as a charming way to promote the season, even if the decorations don’t match one another.
4. Focus on Greenery You Already Have Growing

A clever way to decorate is to focus on the plants you already have instead of buying a live or artificial Christmas tree. If you have ornaments just sitting around, hang them on the plants tough enough to handle their weight. If you have none, just placing ornaments inside their pots or attaching them with string to the plants’ bases might be enough to convey the feeling of a “Christmas plant.”
Many people have indoor houseplants because it helps lower their blood pressure when caring for them. Since you may also already have ornaments, it’s an excellent decision for some impromptu decoration. This kind of festive decor is accessible and will get people talking whenever they visit your home.
5. Blankets are Always Welcome & Cozy

No one can ever have enough throw blankets. People love comfort items so much, many ask for blankets for special occasions, like birthday and holiday presents. If you collect blankets, you likely have some in holiday colors. Swap out your current throw blankets — even if you love them a lot — for ones that fit the season more. Even if you have just a solid red or gold blanket, it can dress your home up for the holidays much more than a neutral-colored throw can.

6. A Fireplace Can’t Help But Set the Mood

If your home has a fireplace, you should know it’s the coziest space in your house. Whether you use it or let it sit there, your fireplace is easily the centerpiece of all your holiday decorations. Making your fireplace stand out will promote a restful feel and you can dress it up with ornamentation or even a coat of paint. Whatever the case, don’t let it just sit there. By dressing up your fireplace, you can instantly change the vibe of your entire home.
7. Choose a Festive Focal Point

Maybe you have some holiday decorations, but they’re limited, so you can’t afford to spread them sparsely throughout your home. Choose one wall — this wall will be your festive focal point. Whether you put bits and baubles on photo frames or a table or paste temporary wallpaper to it, this wall should be your holiday center. That way, cleaning up after the holiday celebrations is easy.
The easiest way to pick your holiday wall is to find one out of the way without much furniture near it. A wall in a hallway might not be ideal, but an entryway would be a great way to greet guests with holiday cheer. You might also have an accent wall in a festive color that you could opt for.
8. Pine Branches Have Benefits

If you have faux pine branches, they can fit almost any area in your home. Any deep green fake plants should take center stage for your holiday decoration. If you tend to decorate small vignettes around your home, you’re bound to have faux greenery you can use to dress up some other areas of your home. Pine branches are the best fake greenery centerpieces, but others will work in a pinch.
Being with plants and seeing green can positively affect you and anyone who enters your home. While artificial plants are no substitute for real ones regarding health benefits, the color green can have beneficial effects. Being surrounded by green can decrease your anxiety and help you feel less stressed overall, so add faux greenery to your holiday decoration if you have it.

Work With What You Have
It can still be the holiday season in your home without having to spend money on new decorations. If you’re willing to DIY some of your decorations with things you have lying around the house, you can create even more festive decorations on a budget. You have endless options to make this holiday yours while adhering to a budget and not buying anything new — you just have to get creative
