Upgrading: Mature Your Home

July 11, 2017

My name is Wintana Kiflu and I am one of the new Marketing Interns for Casart Coverings. I am a senior at T.C. Williams High School and will be attending Howard University after graduating. I plan on majoring in Accounting, with a focus in Forensic Accounting, and my minor is in Interior Design. I am so excited to start a new chapter in my life and to mature as I gain experience.

Marketing Intern, Wintana Kiflu

Since it’s almost time to make one of the biggest changes in my life (a.k.a- College) and being forced to mature, kind of, I figured I might as well make some major changes and while I’m at it, take you guys along for the ride. That is why this blog post is entirely dedicated to some tricks and tips, along with some DIYs to “mature your space.”

  1. Consider mixing light and dark colors. While using bright colors can give the room a warm and inviting feel, they can also overwhelm a room and even make a room seem a little childish. But a mix of light and dark colors can actually make the room feel more elegant and put together. In other words, more mature.

For example, take a look at this dining room/ living area by Danielle Colding and notice how the mix of dark and light colors creates a beautiful look.

In addition, notice how this bedroom designed by Jenna Peffley is not only fun but elegant thanks to her mix of colors.

It is clear that dark and light colors and perfect for each other. And if done right, it can complement a room and completely transform it. To learn more on this topic, take a look at this Casart blog dedicated to why dark colors are a good choice.

2. Embrace bringing the outside into your home. In other words, lots and lots of plants. Not only do plants add life to a home, but they also give the illusion maturity (people tend to think you are mature enough to keep the plant alive).

A perfect way to incorporate plants into your home while still remaining trendy is through terrariums.

Here is a BuzzFeed article dedicated to 21 Terrarium DIYs, with easy, step-by-step instructions.

And for those of us who can’t manage to keep any plants alive, here are 15 Faux Plant Projects to not only help bring life to your space, but that will also survive your maturation process.

A perfect example is this beautifully adorable paper succulent guaranteed to last even longer than the real succulents do.

3. Mix & Match patterns, and metals- carefully! The right combination of different elements can make or break your home. If executed well, the different elements should contrast with one another in such a way that exudes purpose and sophistication. If done haphazardly, it could cause the home to look cluttered and disorganized. Luckily, we here at Casart Coverings are here to help!

When mixing metals, keep in mind that there should be more than just one accessory in that kind of metal in the space. One metal type tends to feel like an accident, various metals feel purposeful.

Here is an example of a perfect execution when it comes to mixing metals.

This home, found in StyleCarrot, uses numerous home decor items with copper and silver finishes to create a perfect mix of metals that compliment that space.

When mixing patterns, it is important to try to mix similar patterns, whether that be in size, shape, or color scheme. In you are not careful, mixing patterns incorrectly could cause an eyesore in your home. So here are some examples to guide you.

4. Don’t forget about the biggest canvas in your home– your walls! Since your maturing is an ongoing process, it might be a good idea to use some temporary and easy decorations that can be exchanged in the future.

A simple way to do this is through some wall hangings. To elevate your space, here is a blog post by the infamous female blogger Mr.Kate, even equipped with a video, dedicated to showing you how to Gallery Wall in 3 Ways.

Here’s a snapshot of Mr.Kate herself creating one of the gallery walls.

And if you’re feeling even more up to the challenge, removable wallcoverings are the way to go. Here are a couple of removable wallcoverings from Casart Coverings that are guaranteed to light up your home.
