You may be wondering why is this wallcovering company that prides itself on bold colors and custom design writing about a pop of white and other wallpaper for that matter? Well, it’s because we appreciate great design when we see it and like to highlight others efforts when well deserved.
It was the Frontgate catalog that called this beautiful, romantic, pop of white, floral wallpaper to our attention. Granted, we’ve previously written about floral designs on a dark ground that pop because of the contrasting background, but this white and floral version takes the idea of romance and artistic design to a new level. Things we love about it: the large scale, photo-realistic yet painterly in approach, artistic history — recalling the talents of the Dutch Master painters like Willem Claesz Heda, Ambrosius Bosschaert (where you might think the term ambrosia came from), Willem Kalf, Pieter Claesz, Jan Davidsz de Heem and Jan van Hysem among many others.
We’re not 100% sure who manufactured the wallpaper Frontgate used for their photo shoot, because unfortunately the catalog doesn’t give credit. However upon editing this post, we’ve discovered it most likely may be Ellie Cashman’s Dark Floral wallpaper. We love how it brings a sophisticated romance back to the interior and also using French decor with a vintage appeal. We first saw it at the time of the Paris terrorists attacks so it was pulling at out heart strings. However, when searching for details, we came across similar wallpaper that definitely comes from a creative place of love, life and appreciation for everyday living and Nature.
We first discovered Ashley Woodson Bailey floral wallpaper on A Cup of Joe blog, as referenced from the weekly pins that Pinterest suggests we’ll like. We must have clicked on floral wallpaper before. Their algorithm is a little big-brother scary but it works sometimes…
What stuck us about the imagery is how evocative and ethereal it was in capturing the essence of the beauty of flowers. Come to find out, the photographs were taken by Ashley Woodson Bailey, who is a florist turned photographer with a talented, photographic eye.
Not only do we love the artistic nature of the wallpaper (she’s been able to translate her photographs onto this medium), but we fully appreciate how it came about. Ashley states on her “stories” that she was randomly struck by a car in 2012 while out touring with her family in their truck. Fortunately, everyone survived. She had her small child with her at the time. However, she was the main one who was physically hurt. She had months of physical therapy after lying seven months flat on her nearly broken back. She couldn’t do much and friends and family brought her flowers, knowing she loved them so. She took photos of them on her phone and was able to manipulate the images in such a way that beholds their artistry. Seeing the creative genius in this process is truly a wonderful thing. It reminds us of the vastly different types of inspiration designers have, as we try to showcase in our Design Minds feature.
Many of these beautiful images became her photographic series and have since been printed onto traditional wallpaper that is permanent in the application, requiring several panels and wallpaper paste to apply. Similarly, is Ellie Cashman’s wallpaper application. Also as a side note, since discovering Ellie Cashman’s (expat) Dutch connection and how her creative path seems to have been remarkably destined, it is more than uncanny that both of these talented artists have come into our orbit.
We have to note here that their artwork is so beautiful that it would make sense to be able to treat even the wallpaper as art and be able to move it from place to place if so desired or needed. Although it can still be appreciated, permanency risks ripping it when removing and these would be so painful to destroy.
