Life is entirely too hectic these days. Whether you’re a busy parent juggling extracurriculars or someone trying to maintain your professional and personal lives, you may be trying to do it all. When you’re at home, you should rest and restore your sense of self. That’s why it’s so important to have a balanced home that puts you at ease. These ideas should help you cultivate a home that keeps you happy and healthy
1. Use Minimal Decorations
Whether you identify as a minimalist or a maximalist, you should know that having fewer knick-knacks sitting out in your home leads to less clutter and less dust to clean. Clutter can stunt how your brain processes or reacts to information, meaning that it could be harder to get work done or even relax in your favorite space. With some practice, you’ll find the right amount of decoration that feels perfect for you.
2. Make Coziness Easy
Houses are meant to be lived in. Though you may want your space to look like it belongs in a magazine, it’s not realistic nor practical to have it set up that way all the time. Have cozy items within reach if you need to plop down on the couch after work. Display the items that bring you comfort and find a way to work them into the theme of a room rather than leaving them out of your design. Prioritize coziness and practicality, and your home will still come together.
3. Lean into Aromatherapy
Having the right smells in your house can make you look forward to returning home. Try to find a smell that relaxes you — it might be something linked to your childhood. Smell is strongly linked to memories, likely because your sense of smell is the only one fully developed in the womb. You can exploit this knowledge by finding a scent that relaxes you and making it the signature smell of your home.
4. Add Natural Light
Light fixtures that fit your aesthetic are great, but nothing can replace natural light. The inspiration you’ll feel as the natural light floods in through your windows or shines through sheer curtains can help you feel good while also saving money on your energy bills. A light space where sunlight is celebrated can help your home feel even more peaceful and closer to nature.
5. Keep a Cleaning Schedule
You don’t need an eyesore of a chore chart hanging up in your kitchen to help you keep track of your cleaning regimen. Plenty of apps can remind you of what to do on certain days to help you leave your home sparkling. Still, try to clean every week, even if your home isn’t messy. Around 66% of people think they get a rested night of sleep in a clean bedroom. You can’t relax in clutter, so make it easier for yourself by cleaning along the way.
6. Make Small Changes
Making tiny changes to your routine can actually change how you perceive your home. For example, you could start making your bed every morning. That way, when you retire to your bedroom, your bed will look perfectly put together and make you feel a sense of calmness. Otherwise, you might be fighting to untangle your sheets and comforter or duvet. Even though you’ll sleep in it either way, a more uniform look will impress you and is definitely worth the extra minute of difference.
7. Bring in Houseplants
A trip to a greenhouse might be in your future. Adding plants to your home is a great way to see if you can care for something and may be a stepping stone to getting a pet. Being surrounded by plants can lower your blood pressure, making them a great addition to any stressed-out household. Over time, you can add more plants that are more challenging to raise. If you’re a beginner plant parent, consider opting for something low-maintenance, such as a succulent.
8. Build Gallery Walls
Gallery walls are a great way to fill up dead space that may leave your home feeling empty. You can adorn your walls with photos of your loved ones or artwork that makes you happy. You could even reach out to an artist you admire and ask them about commissioning something from them. Gallery walls are excellent opportunities to dress up your wall in a pleasant pattern, and it could give you some peace to see all your favorite things in one place.
9. Shop Curated Art
Art isn’t just for your walls. You can find plenty of ways to bring beautiful patterns and art into your home if you analyze your space. For example, one of the best ways to add a pop of color to your home might be to add a throw blanket that gets softer when you wash it, ensuring the coziness of your home will be unmatched. You can achieve the same effect with throw pillows, which can brighten up any dark or neutral-toned couch.
10. Paint the Walls
It’s difficult to relax in a room full of bright, energizing colors. Research color theory and figure out what colors would be best in which spaces. For example, you may want to add green to your home office because of its de-stressing properties. Painting the walls a soothing color to you, whether it be your favorite color or a neutral tone, can help add to the calming atmosphere.
11. Go Thrifting
Instead of buying several new things to dress up your space, consider going to a thrift store and seeing if any of its inventory can work for the vibe you want in your space. Thrift store finds are more likely to fit within your budget, and as long as you see a piece for what it could be instead of what it is, almost any sturdy, clean piece of furniture or decoration could work in your home. In fact, the thrift store may be the best place to find pricier items, like rugs, which can change the entire vibe of a room, or mirrors.
12. Turn Up the Ambiance
Sometimes, it’s nice to sit in silence. However, one of the best ways to amplify the calming effects of your home is to put on a video with soothing sounds. The most calming noise may be different from person to person. You might like the pleasant sounds of rain, while other people might listen to classical music to unwind. Understand what your most relaxing sound is and try playing it in the background while you do other things.
13. Add a Mural
If you have a large wall with nothing going on, instead of trying to adorn it with knick-knacks, consider putting a mural on it. Whether you find an adhesive mural or have one painted, you want to know the art you put on it will relax you. Clouds are the perfect backdrop for a serene home, as they promote relaxation and stress reduction, likely due to the memories they conjure of lying back and watching them move by. By adding a mural, you’ll also have one less wall to worry about decorating.
14. Don’t Rely on Screens
Some people don’t have televisions in their living room and instead opt to display art for the inspiration it brings. Screens aren’t always bad — sometimes, you want to watch a movie or show with loved ones or show them something on your phone. However, you should also aim to surround yourself with items that aren’t all electricity-run or battery-based. You may find that you’re less stressed when you step a bit further away from technology.
15. Bring in Flowers
Fresh-cut flowers could liven up your space without much effort. Adding a vase full of blooms to your home makes you more joyful, so it is a good idea to have these bright spots in your house at all times. Try to support local florists, or, if you’re on a budget, make your own stellar bouquet from a grocery store. Make sure to replace the flowers once they wilt.
Decorate Your Home as You See Fit
Spring brings new beginnings, and your home should lean into that ideal by offering you a breath of fresh air every time you sit down. Ultimately, a home decorated for comfort, peace and calmness is one that looks exactly how you want it to. Whether you need to get DIY projects out of the way or bring out your favorite things from past homes, only you can define what coziness is and mold your home to fit that aesthetic. Eventually, you should feel more at ease at home than anywhere else.
