We are all taken aback by the effects of Hurricane Sandy. When I see the images, I’m stricken with eery memories of living through Hurricane Katrina, while my family was in New Orleans, which was a nightmare. Although many in NJ and NY especially are still without power, with damage done to homes and even lives lost, it’s heartwarming to see those who can help step up to do so. The service providers are also the ones to thank. Seeing so much that you’ve known about your home town change in a flash really rocks you, even if you were lucky enough to be unscathed personally by the storm. Click on this Google Crisis Map and you can see just how large an area has been hit.
We are keeping those affected by Hurricane Sandy in our thoughts and want to list several places here where you can help if you choose. We are have put a banner on our blog for donations, have sent some funding as well as clothing.
- Text “REDCROSS” to 90999 to Make a Donation – Customers of participating wireless carriers can make a $10 donation to support Disaster Relief by texting “REDCROSS” to 90999. Donations will be added to your mobile phone bill or deducted from your prepaid account. Message and Data rates may apply. Full terms and privacy policy can be found at redcross.org/m.
The Salvation Army – provides mobile shelters and food units.
Feeding America – distributes thousands of pounds of emergency food, water and supplies to victims in the hurricane zone.
AmeriCares – provides supplies and medicine to those affected by Hurricane Sandy.
The Kelly and Michael Show – is airing a telethon TODAY, as part of ABC’s Day of Giving, in conjunction with their annual Halloween Show that they have postponed for this Monday.
Seeing these two recent Design Showhouses in Houzz recently, made me want to post them here as creative ways to help worthwhile ongoing causes.
This Over the Top Holiday Showhouse is just that — a fantasy escape into an interior that suspends your reality while donating to Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation. Coincidentally, The Holiday House is in Manhattan and originally open to the public through November 18th. Because of the storm, it is extending the opening through November 25th. This would be a great break from having to deal with what may not be working in NYC.
Even though this Fantasy Design Showhouse that Serves Up Style in Portland, Oregon ended on October 6, it is definitely worth viewing for the innovative ways these designers thought to feature a dining room that benefits Lupus Awareness. It is still generating responses.
We hope you and yours are safe and wish everyone in Hurricane Sandy’s wake our best as the recovery begins.
