A typical toile pattern is a classic design pattern used in interior design. Like your mama’s toile, it can also be a bit outdated but can certainly be used in ways that complement contemporary design without being overwhelming.
Here are some examples of “not your mama’s toile” and what to look for when using. Incorporating some or all of these useful design tips will help to modernize the look.
1. Use a large-scale design.
2. Use on an accent wall, or above wainscoting rather than overall room coverage, which can be nice but could also be overwhelming. Having breaks in the space helps balance the visual impact.
3. Use unexpected colors (via WalkUpBlog.com).
4. Use on other surfaces besides walls. What about furniture, like cabinet fronts or a screen? Think “off the room walls”…
5. Toile is classic for a child’s room but can also be used for adult decoration, as vintage style. Our new Alice in Wonderland Collection, featuring Toile, Toppers and Headboard can all be used in ways above. The pattern scale is larger than your typical toile, standard colors can be customized and the Headboard in conjunction with the Toppers, can all be used as accent pieces and the wallcoverings can go over each other without causing damage when removed and reused.
Here’s a great run down about the history of toile from Design Sponge & what makes it timeless.
