Everything is coming up roses, for tomorrow is the 137th Kentucky Derby.
The Run For The Roses is known as the Greatest Two Minutes in Sports. Sunday is Mother’s Day. This represents a double whammy for florist as the use of roses and red ones in particular will abound.
I’m having a Derby party tomorrow. It will be a small group. Just the DWI group of my friends (divorced, widowed and independent). The dress code is casual, but they must wear a hat. It’s REALLY all about the hat!

And the silver julep cups! If you want a good Mint Julep recipe, see the Derby blog post last year. We’ll enjoy mint juleps, beer, wine, Kentucky burgoo with crusty bread, ham and tea biscuits with Jezebel sauce, mandarin orange, grape, avocado and toasted slivered almond salad with curry dressing, and walnut-Stilton cheese salad with raspberry vinaigrette. We’ll finish with a dessert combination of bourbon balls and watermelon Italian ices. In between all the noshing, we’ll sing My Old Kentucky Home when the horses come out on the track, place a friendly bet or two and fix another julep!
Red (for roses) is supposed to stimulate the appetite so I’ve gathered as much red as I could for the table.

The only addition I wish I could make is a Casart Coverings red faux padded harlequin wallcovering on the wall.

By the time I’ve tidied up and things are put away, I’ll look forward to a relaxed Mother’s Day on Sunday. Enjoy the Run for the Roses Derby and all the roses in the video below.
