I find each new year I set out to clean, organize and start anew with a fresh palette. Part of this takes organizing, which at first can seem overwhelming. I suggest to avoid or minimize this frustration, compart-mental-ize — mentally visualize compartments helping you organize. Work in sections of a room at a time and clear the clutter, store what you may need and organize what you need to be immediately accessible. Focus on keeping areas as simple as possible. Here are some clever storage solutions to help with this effort.

Once the clutter is removed and or concealed, you can concentrate on how you’d like to decorate, so your personal style becomes the focal point, not your stuff. Repositionable stair riser covers are a good place to start.

Pull out rack shelving can work in a kitchen as well as a bathroom.

Don’t let any space go to waste. Command the corners.

Open shelving can work too but also can be concealed and opened when needed with mini, retractable, “garage” type door.

Use tight spaces for practical purposes. Open shelves in this bathroom add function to the otherwise unused space.

Not all shelving or compartments have to be visible. Hidden areas between vertical joists provide secret storage that is even more concealed by the vertical lines of wainscoting. No handles are needed if the cabinets are pressure sensitive with magnetic closures.

This banquette works similarly with concealed compartments that can be tapped to open and close — a great way to store pillows or blankets.

This type of storage simply adds a faux cabinet front to allow deep shelving to be rolled out under the stairs. What a great way to command unused space in a basement. Notice bins and baskets help to contain and organize items within the shelves.

Finally, even if your storage is visible, you can style it. Try a monochromatic theme.
