Spooky season is just around the corner! And whether you’re a person with all-around witchy vibes or you’re a chic DIY master looking for the perfect accessories for every season, you need the best Halloween decor you can find.
While skeletons and cobwebs might be in store for the local haunted house, you may feel inclined to go a bit more sophisticated using mostly natural elements for your chic Halloween decor this year. Even with the kitschy nature of the holiday, there are plenty of ways to decorate your home for Halloween in a tasteful way. Here are just a few ideas that may appeal to you.
1. Pumpkins
It only makes sense to start off with the classics — and that’s one of the many great things about decorating with pumpkins! They’re absolutely classic, which is why they can be so tasteful and chic-looking.
Whether you find pumpkins at the grocery store or you go and pick them yourself, their simplicity can allow you to keep them throughout the season, even after Halloween.
2. Gourds
In the same realm as pumpkins, gourds can be fantastic decorations for Halloween as well as other holidays throughout the autumn season. While you can certainly find plenty of pumpkins all around, picking up a gourd or two can bring some variety into your decor, which is something to celebrate!
3. Jack-O-Lanterns
If you’d rather get a little more specific with your decor, you can always maintain the classic flair you’re going for with a few jack-o-lanterns. You can carve any design that strikes your fancy onto them, and stash an antique candle inside for an even classier look.
4. Painted Pumpkins
Let’s face it: carving pumpkins can be a bit of work. That’s why painting your pumpkins is a great option — especially if you’re short on time or you’re looking for a craft the kids can do too. You can stick with Halloween themes, or you can go a bit outside the box. Regardless, painting is another way to utilize pumpkins and gourds in your chic and and natural Halloween decor.
5. Autumn Wreaths
Speaking of natural and seasonal plants, autumnal wreaths can be a great option for sophisticated decoration in your home. Not only is it great for the environment to use seasonal and local plants in your design, but it also works with a subtlety that can complement your decor for the rest of the season!
6. Colorful Lights
Lights are almost always a part of seasonal decoration, but by simply including orange, purple, or even brown lights either outdoors or in your home, you can create a tasteful glow that fits with the colors of the season! Plus, when the holiday is over, you can swap them out for your Christmas lights.
7. Tasteful Candles
If you love the idea of glowing warmth and spooky ambiance, candles are probably some of the best decorative accessories for the Halloween season. Whether you stash them inside lanterns, stack them all around the house, or find scented candles with crisp autumn scents, candles are an extremely chic and mature way to express your seasonal cheer.
8. Monochrome
Monochrome design has been extremely popular in recent years. When you’re planning to go chic and sophisticated for any season, streamlining with a singular color can bring a sense of cohesion and style to your decor, rather than simply feeling like a blast of all things seasonal. Try going for all orange decorations, or even varying shades of orange for a bit of depth.
9. Gothic Flair
One of the best ways to embody the spooky spirit of Halloween in your home is perhaps going a bit left of center with your decor. Even if you don’t hang ghosts and jack-o-lanterns everywhere, you can still make your home feel mysterious and spooky by going for a bit of gothic flair. If you happen to have an older home with Victorian features, this can make a gothic design even easier. However, there’s plenty of opportunity for it even if you don’t have a Victorian home.
10. Halloween Color Scheme
In the same vein as the monochrome tip, you can always go for more standard design elements while incorporating a theme of Halloween colors. Going for burnt oranges, purples, and other dark neutrals can be a very subtle but effective way to bring the autumn spirit into your home. Additionally, many of these decorations can roll over into the remainder of autumn because the colors are extremely versatile.
11. Paint It Black
If you truly aren’t afraid of being bold, you can go all in and simply go for black decor everywhere. Painting things black is not for the faint of heart, but it certainly can communicate the gothic style you’re going for without having to resort to cheaper, more juvenile design elements. Plus, if you happen to enjoy that aesthetic on its own, you can keep it around long after Halloween is over.
12. Reference Pop Culture
If you happen to have any favorite movies, books, shows, and other pop culture media that embody the creepy spirit of Halloween, you can always explore those references in your home decor! Whether you have a favorite movie or a literary reference that makes sense in the context of your decorations, you can put up posters, use quotes, or even try out other elements to make Halloween the star of the show — think “Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Hocus Pocus,” or even “Harry Potter!”
13. Use Aromatherapy
Although aromatherapy isn’t necessarily a visual design element, it can certainly add to the atmosphere of a space. If you love scented candles, essential oils, and incense, you can bring in specific scents for the autumn season that add a bit of spice! Whether you love pumpkin spice, fresh leaves, cinnamon, or even more off-the-beaten-path scents like pomegranate and chai, the scent can bring some coziness into any room.
Also pairing pumpkins with potted plants that have a scented aroma like juniper can bring both the visual and aromatherapy to your exterior decor for a chic and natural Halloween season.
Many thanks to Rose for this interesting article with lots of helpful tips!
