It comes every year but what does Memorial Day mean?<\/p>\n
A long weekend, the end of school, the beginning of summer vacations, picnics, no mail delivery, concerts, fireworks…all things we associate with Memorial Day.\u00a0 But what is really the significance of this federal holiday which is observed on the last Monday in May?<\/p>\n
Originally known as\u00a0 Decoration Day,\u00a0 it commemorates men and women who died while in military service to the United States. First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following theCivil War, it has been extended to honor Americans who have died in all wars.<\/p>\n
Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials. Another tradition is to fly the American flag at half-mast from dawn until noon.\u00a0 American flags are placed on tombs in military cemeteries throughout the world during Memorial Day weekend.
