Photo-Stuart Ramson\/AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>How are those &#8220;in&#8221; colors determined and by whom?\u00a0 According to <a title=\"NPR-color-company-set-fashoion-trends\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/02\/10\/133636541\/the-business-of-color-company-sets-fashion-trends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR<\/a> , trends are rarely decided by individuals.\u00a0 They are selected by a secret color committee.\u00a0 One of the most powerful committees is a group of 10 people whose names remain a secret.\u00a0 They are invited by <a title=\"Pantone\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pantone.com\/pages\/pantone\/Pantone.aspx?pg=20821&amp;ca=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pantone <\/a>to meet twice a year in Europe in an all white room so as not to be distracted in making their selections.\u00a0 Pantone,\u00a0 a New Jersey company whose sole business is color,\u00a0 is unrivaled in setting the standard for color tones.\u00a0\u00a0 NPR, a market research group, says Pantone is involved in the coloration of nearly half of all the garments sold in the US.\u00a0 Designer David Shah runs Pantone&#8217;s committee meeting and seeks advice from people in various industries.\u00a0 Shah said, &#8220;I can&#8217;t tell you the names. They&#8217;re involved with everything from furniture through to clothing and knitwear.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pantone&#8217;s vice president for fashion, home and interiors, Laurie Pressman, says the reason for color standards is to provide a vocabulary via swatches, color books and computer files,\u00a0 to enable developed-world companies to talk to their overseas suppliers.\u00a0 &#8220;What you have now is so much production shifted to Asia,&#8221; she says. &#8220;It&#8217;s very key to have a standard way to communicate from the design side all the way down through the supply chain.&#8221;\u00a0 There are 1,925 colors in Pantone&#8217;s index of textile colors and each one has a unique identifying number.\u00a0 At <a title=\"Casart-coverings\" href=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/wallfinishes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casart coverings<\/a>, all of our designs can be matched to Pantone colors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5587\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5587\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Casart_coverings_swatch_samples\" href=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/wallfinishes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5587\" title=\"swatchsample\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/swatchsample.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5587\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Casart coverings swatch samples<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Alright, I bet I can guess the question you are just dying to ask: why would any designer in his\/her right mind want to be like all the others.\u00a0\u00a0 John Crocco, the creative director for\u00a0Perry Ellis, calls color forecasts a self-fulfilling prophecy. He says that if designers choose to follow such forecasts, then they&#8217;ll be &#8220;part of what ultimately becomes the trend.&#8221;\u00a0 Ignoring the trend is risky business and can result in irrelevance for the designer.\u00a0 So I guess in this case it&#8217;s unwise to be a salmon!
