{"id":3801,"date":"2010-07-16T07:00:40","date_gmt":"2010-07-16T11:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/?p=3801"},"modified":"2025-01-22T14:32:44","modified_gmt":"2025-01-22T19:32:44","slug":"two-weeks-in-tunisia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/two-weeks-in-tunisia\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Weeks In Tunisia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been more than a month since the end of my Tunisia trip and I haven&#8217;t been able to write about it yet.\u00a0 So many other things to think about.<\/p>\n<p>The trip started out badly.\u00a0 I had a 7 hour delay leaving JFK, missed connecting flight to Tunis out of Rome which resulted in an 8 hour wait until the next flight (only two a day).\u00a0 I arrived in Tunis at 10:30 p.m. and should have arrived at 9:30 that morning.\u00a0 I was met by three young Arab men holding a sign with the tour company&#8217;s name.\u00a0 We proceeded to the car park and then it became funny.\u00a0 They couldn&#8217;t agree on where they had parked the car.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t a company vehicle.\u00a0 It was a private, small car.\u00a0 We found it, put my luggage in the trunk, all squeezed in and headed off, hopefully to my hotel.\u00a0 At that point I wondered if I had lost my senses tooling through the streets of a foreign country late at night with three men I had never laid eyes on before!<\/p>\n<p>During the rest of the Tunisia trip we visited many ancient ruins, many village markets, had an hour meeting with an imam, rode a camel, interviewed a\u00a0 belly dancer, swatted at a lot of flies, ate two home hosted meals, saw the sets for Star Wars and the English Patient, and spent hours riding across the Sahara in a 4-wheel drive vehicle to spend a night in a desert tent camp.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the skinny.<\/p>\n<p>Ruins are surprisingly sophisticated with evidence of heated floors, fountains, indoor bathrooms and beautiful mosaic &#8220;carpets&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0168-ampitheatre-Tunisia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3823 size-full\" title=\"IMG_0168 ampitheatre Tunisia\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0168-ampitheatre-Tunisia.jpg\" alt=\"Tunisia trip collesium on casartblog\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0168-ampitheatre-Tunisia.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0168-ampitheatre-Tunisia-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the butcher section of the markets you could tell what&#8217;s the special\u00a0 for the day because the animal&#8217;s head (rabbit, cow, goat, camel) was on display. Lucky for you, I&#8217;m not adding a picture here.<\/p>\n<p>The imam was a professor and we could ask him anything we wanted.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure what he thought about most of the questions being asked by the women in our group.\u00a0 I threw care to the wind and asked him to define jihad.\u00a0 He explained it as a crusade for a belief, or a personal struggle to attain religious discipline.\u00a0 <strong>He said it could be a holy war on behalf of Islam but assured us it did not result in death or harm to anyone! <\/strong>He said extremists are using Islam to justify their actions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0111-Imam-Tunisia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3824 size-full\" title=\"IMG_0111 Imam Tunisia\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0111-Imam-Tunisia.jpg\" alt=\"Inam in Tunisia on casartblog\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0111-Imam-Tunisia.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0111-Imam-Tunisia-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was my third camel ride and I have yet to meet a camel I like.\u00a0 They are mean, spit, hiss and try to bite.\u00a0 We rode in full Bedouin garb for one hour starting right before noon.\u00a0 These people obviously never heard Noel Coward&#8217;s song <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mad Dogs and Englishmen Go Out in the Noon Day Sun! <\/span> Okay, here&#8217;s the place where you fall over laughing!\u00a0 Now don&#8217;t I look like I&#8217;m having fun?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Tunisia-camel-ride.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3839 size-full\" title=\"Tunisia camel ride\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Tunisia-camel-ride.jpg\" alt=\"Tunisian camel ride on casartblog\" width=\"377\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Tunisia-camel-ride.jpg 377w, https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Tunisia-camel-ride-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The belly dancer performed after a dinner and then joined us to be interviewed.\u00a0 She said she loves dancing but can&#8217;t dance in her own city because of the social stigma.\u00a0 Her parents do not accept what she does.\u00a0 She would like to marry and would quit dancing if she married.\u00a0 Our guide explained that it will be very difficult for her to find a man to marry her since what she does is considered a form of prostitution.<\/p>\n<p>The film sets were in the middle of nowhere in the desert but the minute we got out of the Jeeps, kids selling trinkets appeared on motor bikes from out of the blue.\u00a0 The sleepless night in the tent by myself was terrifying.\u00a0 My tent was on one end in a line of tents that did not open into the camp but opened on the far side into the vastness of the Sahara.\u00a0 Tents creek at night when the wind blows.\u00a0 Every noise made me wonder if a mouse (there was one in the dining tent earlier), a scorpion, a snake or some crazed Arab would appear.\u00a0 My tent is the last one on the left in the picture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0415-tent-camp-Tunisia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3825 size-full\" title=\"IMG_0415 tent camp Tunisia\" src=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0415-tent-camp-Tunisia.jpg\" alt=\"Tunisian tents on casartblog\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0415-tent-camp-Tunisia.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/casartblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/IMG_0415-tent-camp-Tunisia-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The population is 98% Muslim.\u00a0 The people were very friendly and I never felt threatened (except for the night in the tent).\u00a0 Tunisia was a French protectorate and most of the people we met spoke French, even the children would greet you with &#8220;Bon jour&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 People use tiles, rugs,\u00a0 marble and mosaics extensively in decorating and the only wallpaper I saw was in hotels.\u00a0 I took lots of pictures and some of them reminded me of home, <a title=\"Casart Products\" href=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/products.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casart wallcovering <\/a>designs, or possibilities for future designs.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an iron butterfly on a door that reminded me of our butterflies.\u00a0 Lindsey just posted on butterflies Wednesday. on the well.&#8221;\u00a0 The woman asks, &#8221; Isn&#8217;t that like Lindsay Lohan giving it a sobriety test?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There is something to laugh about today.\u00a0 BP reported they were able to stop the leak yesterday.\u00a0 Now follows a few days of watching the pressure to see if it holds and doesn&#8217;t decrease indicating that there is a leak somewhere else under the Gulf floor.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s all keep our fingers crossed and hope it will hold!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"simple-translate\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"simple-translate-button isShow\" style=\"background-image: url('moz-extension:\/\/429c6b4e-438e-4e11-919a-cf9bb679fe99\/icons\/512.png');
