Halloween is right around the corner. Are you dressing up?<\/p>\n

Rather than concentrating on the traditional scary costume and face mask for this holiday, we thought we’d let you decide if these are spooky or spectacular?<\/p>\n

With our love for Venice, we think a Venetian mask would be appropriate for the occasion.<\/p>\n

However, there are other masks, like the ones we sometimes wear everyday, as poetically described by Rose-tinted Rambles<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And, even artistic ones that can be hand-painted, such as this one below from Design Juices.<\/p>\n

The one above reminds me of our Peacock Damask wallcovering<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you look closely you may see several masks because the peacock feathers intrinsically have ‘eyes’ but you can also see the overall peacock pattern.<\/p>\n

It’s a little trompe l’oeil trick to ‘fool the eye’ with this duality but we like that you can see what you want to see.<\/p>\n

Our inspiration was to incorporate the fleur-de-lis from our New Orleans heritage and a Renaissance peacock pattern that also harkened to the wonderfully clever and grotesque portraits by Giuseppe Arcimoboldo, who used mostly fruits and vegetables to create portraits through their unique compositions.<\/p>\n

As mentioned, we also enjoy the flamboyant masks from Venice, which is representative of one of our our favorite places. I’ve purchased several, non-typical Venetian masks on few trips to Venice and appreciate the quality of their hand-craftmanship from true artisans. This Ca’ Macana<\/a>\u00a0shop in Venice offers classes in Venetian mask making.<\/p>\n
