noreferrer\">Traditional Home<\/a> and I was hooked!\u00a0 We are fond of wood at Casart-<a title=\"casart-coverings-organics-woods\" href=\"https:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/organics.html#fauxbois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Faux Bois, Zebrawood, and Satinwood,<\/a> but what <a title=\"david-esterly\" href=\"https:\/\/davidesterly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Esterly <\/a>does with <a title=\"wikipedia-tilia-linden-limewood\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tilia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Limewood ( Linden, occupation.&#8221;\u00a0 Although Esterly is a Harvard grad and Fulbright Scholar with a doctorate in English literature from Cambridge, he turned away from a career in academia to become a self-taught master wood-carver.\u00a0 His inspiration?\u00a0 The 17th century master wood-carver,<a title=\"grinling-gibbons-wikipedia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grinling_Gibbons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Grinling Gibbons.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11090\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11090\" style=\"width: 336px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"grinling-gibbons-wikipedia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grinling_Gibbons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11090\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grinling Gibbons by Sir Godfrey Kneller<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gibbons did not stain his carvings.\u00a0 He left the wood bare which was an innovation of the time.\u00a0 Placed on a background of darker oak, the paler carved wood became the focus of the decorative scheme.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the Victorians\u00a0 had a propensity for staining the carvings and that is the state in which many are seen today.\u00a0 When a 1986 fire at Hampton Court Palace destroyed a 7-foot cascade, or drop, of carved vegetation, a Gibbons masterpiece, Esterly reproduced the work.\u00a0 He was at Hampton Court for a year.\u00a0 To learn more, read Esterly&#8217;s memoir <em><a title=\"david esterly-the-lost-carving\"
