Figuring out your home’s next interior design style might be more challenging than expected. The aesthetic has to match your personality, but where do you start if you’re unsure what that means? Here’s how to find the interior design style that speaks to you and makes your decorating process feel effortless.

Types of Interior Design Styles

Your favorite home makeover shows let you watch professional interior designers offer their clients an array of styles. These are some of the most popular types of interior design that could get your creativity flowing.

1. Midcentury Modern

People began decorating with a midcentury modern flare just before World War II through the 1970s. This style eliminated patterned upholstery and ornamental decorations beloved by previous generations. It utilizes clean lines and curved angles to create relaxing atmospheres. You’ll also find brighter colors in this aesthetic, especially from designs closer to the 1960s and ‘70s.

2. Farmhouse

You might be one of the many homeowners who love the farmhouse style for its natural elements with a modern flare. Joanna Gaines is one of many designers who claimed the design style for their brands. It leans into plant decorations, neutral colors and outdoor themes.

When starting in this decorating style, you’ll likely pick from five common wood types to match your cabinetry, floors and furniture. Wood is essential in this aesthetic as it refers to barn doors, farm fencing and wooded getaways.

3. Bohemianism

You might love a bohemian home if you’ve ever described yourself as free-spirited. It gives your living space more room for eclectic collections and decor. Add whatever art inspires you across cultures. You’ll nail the bohemian style if your selections lend an artistic style to a living area decorated with nature elements and soft textures.

A boho house will also utilize more unique decorating options. Your home could feature floor cushions that create an intimate lounge space drawing from natural elements like ocean teals or forest greens. It depends on how you want your house to stand out.

4. Rustic

There’s an old-world charm to rustic homes that captures hearts and minds. Distressed wood and industrial touches lend a romantic look to houses in this style. Consider making your fireplace a visual statement piece and sticking with neutral color palettes.

Browsing various collections and comparing their in-stock decorations will also help you find the best rustic decor for your updated home. Keep an eye out for anything cottage or nature-inspired to get started with this style.

5. Coastal

You’ll always feel like you’re at the beach in a coastal home. It brings oceanic elements into any living space with sea-inspired colors and bubbles or aquatic animal motifs. Teals and blues are common for this style as well.

If you’re nervous about decorating your living space because you’re renting, focus on your furniture. A high-end table or couch lends luxury to any room without changing the walls or floors. You can also take high-quality furniture to your future apartments because they’ll last a long time.

How to Find Your Interior Design Style

Once you’re ready to pick the interior design style that speaks to you, use these tips to find the best option. You’ll settle on a style that matches your personality and makes your house feel more like a home.

1. Consider Your Desired Vibe

What feeling do you want your home to have? Some people want a relaxing getaway, a party space or a house that feels like a celebrity tour in Architectural Digest. Picking a feeling for your home’s design will help you choose decorations like midcentury rugs or rustic shelf decor to complete your interior design style.

2. Curate Inspiring Images

Choosing a home design style is easier if you can visualize it. Get online and add whatever images you like to a virtual board or photo album. After adding pictures for a few days, reflect on the recurring interior design threads. Note the colors, textures and prints reappearing most frequently in your collections. You’ll pick up on your subconscious preferences and find a clear path forward.

3. Pick Between Modern or Traditional

Interior design styles fit within one of two categories — modern or traditional. Choosing a general path forward with these two options will guide you to potential aesthetics.

Modern homes include sleek lines, minimalist furniture and warm decor. It’s where you’ll find hygge houses or midcentury modern elements.

Traditional living spaces use elaborate moldings, textured fabrics and vintage furniture to create the right vibe. It concludes everything from Victorian homes to coastal cottages and even farmhouse decor.

4. Find Sources of Inspiration

When you have a desired interior design style or a handful of potential options, it’s time to find sources of continual inspiration. It could be a collection of things like a celebrity’s home, a professional designer’s website with client photo albums or a decorator’s Pinterest page.

Even if you can’t perfectly recreate the pictures you like, you can use interior design tricks to make anything happen. You could get a thrifted headboard and add new upholstery to transform it into your desired style. A fresh coat of paint or wood stain will make anything look new. If you get creative, things that inspire you could become part of your home.

5. Determine Your Budget

The bronze clawfoot bathtub of your dreams may fit your desired decorating style, but it might be outside your budget. You won’t know until you decide how much to spend on future home upgrades.

Create a budget based on your saving and spending abilities. Once you have a number, you can make your preferred style work for you. Watch for sales, check out thrift shops and visit stores that sell residential building materials at a discounted price. You’ll find an array of options outside of mainstream styles.

Home decorating shops and online brands also have a wealth of available decor. Creative candles or dreamy lavender seating arrangements could be the final touch your home needs to look like new.

Enjoy Your Interior Design Experience

Decorating your home shouldn’t feel overwhelming. Consider these interior design styles and tips to find the makeover plan that speaks to you. Once you find decor, paint and furniture that matches your personality, you’ll know exactly what you need to transform your interior look.
